Spotting trends

Man, this is difficult. Basically you have to live and breath the music to know it. Then you have basic feel on what is new and different. This is not 'nuff though. You have to be almost a magician to spot successful trends. Some say that it is impossible to teach it, but I say that you can practise your skills and there some guidelines come in handy.

  • It is never something totally new that grabs media attention and becomes popular - follow the mainstream and lurk on the fringe.
  • Make friends with everybody on the field and you will get lot of underground information about what people are listening.
  • Don't narrow yourself on one style, if you are able to see beyond borders, you will be able to fuse tastes.
  • Listen to the mainstream stuff to get an idea what people like.
  • Never trust something overproduced that stuff is just mathematics - pour in the marketing money X and out comes record sales Y.

Trekking and tripping

Ive been around the globe couple o times and one thing that always gets to me is the difficulty of getting good information about lodging and eating. Just the basic stuff but still so difficult. Lonely planet is bit too mainstream for my purposes but most of the time I find myself suffling through its pages.

Other difficult thing - while on the road - is finding professional information.

http://www.uk-disco.co.uk/

This site is something I keep an eye on. Even I know most of the market info that I need to get gigs. This sort of market places are good nexuses for DJs that are just starting out.

Advice of today: DJs life is full of travelling and it is hard to establish customer contacts. Start a simple website and get listed in as many electronic resources as possible. You can always keep in touch with your electronic headquarters, no matter where you are playing at the moment.

dj lama not dalai lama

I am just a dj and have nothing to do with religious stuff, except that nirvana you get when you just dance away.
